Last week, in a rare bipartisan vote of 357-70, the House passed a tax bill that, among other things, expands the Child Tax Credit. Doing so would help millions of children from low-income families and spur the construction of affordable housing—as many as 200,000 units.
Next week, NEA’s Board will be in Washington and will urge senators to pass H.R. 7024, the bill containing the expanded Child Tax Credit. The Board will also urge members of both chambers to cosponsor the Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act (S. 2581/H.R. 5030) and the ESP “Bill of Rights” (S.Res. 450/H.Res. 990). To learn more about supporting ESPs, check out this new video from our government relations team.
On Jan. 31, NEA President Becky Pringle addressed the Congressional Labor Caucus, comprised of 106 Democrats representing about half of the House Democratic caucus. Its mission is to promote and protect workers and labor.
“Our vision,” she said, “is uniting this nation to reclaim public education as a common good, as the foundation of our democracy, and then transform it into something it was never designed to be—a racially and socially just and equitable system that prepares every student, every one, to succeed in this diverse and interdependent world.”
In President Pringle’s words: “We need a system designed around the joy of teaching and learning, a system with a deep sense of community and shared responsibility, a system where high expectations are matched with equitable resources and plentiful supports.”
Tell members of Congress what you think!
