Last week, President-elect Trump announced his choice for Secretary of Education: Linda McMahon, the professional wrestling mogul who headed the U.S. Small Business Administration in his first administration. This time, she will execute Project 2025 plans to expand vouchers nationwide and gut the U.S. Department of Education.
“The Senate must stand up for our students and reject Donald Trump’s unqualified nominee, Linda McMahon. Our students and our nation deserve so much better than Betsy DeVos 2.0,” said NEA President Becky Pringle.
As the 118th Congress enters the final stretch, NEA is urging the Senate to prioritize passage of the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act (S. 597/H.R. 82). The House voted overwhelmingly for the bill, which fully repeals the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) that have already robbed 2.8 million retirees of Social Security benefits. Another 6 million working Americans stand to lose Social Security benefits to the WEP.
NEA is also urging the Senate to confirm judges nominated by President Biden before it’s too late. Federal judges serve for life and they can have a BIG impact on issues that matter to us—like public education, civil rights, and workers’ rights.
Mustafa Kasubhai, among those for whom we advocated, has been confirmed. As our letter to Congress said, “Beyond professional qualifications, Judge Kasubhai brings to the bench real-life perspectives that help further the fundamental goal of equal justice for all. He has extensive experience with working people and unions.”
