The House will spend the next few weeks grappling with the details of the GOP’s reconciliation bill—the legislative vehicle to enact more tax cuts for billionaires, paid for by everyone else.
Many of our priorities are under attack.
Slashing Medicaid/CHIP, the fourth-largest source of support for K-12 public schools, would hurt every student—not just those receiving health care coverage. The nutrition safety net, including school meals and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is threatened. Cuts in student loan programs could put higher education out of reach for millions.
The Trump administration’s legislative agenda also includes a tax credit voucher scheme to divert $100 billion in taxpayer dollars to private and religious schools with no public accountability. Students with disabilities and rural communities—where 20 percent of our students live and public schools are the economic center—would be among those hit hardest.
Now, more than ever, we need to raise our voices in opposition. NEA’s Board of Directors will be on Capitol Hill this week as well—perfect timing.
Tell Congress what you think!
