Hello MTA members and comrades,
Deb and I had the honor of attending the higher ed Fair Wages Now actions at Salem State University and UMass Lowell, pictured above. These were among many actions that were taking place across the Commonwealth to raise awareness about our Nov. 20 rally at the State House. (Register here!) I had many thoughts, both nostalgic and in the moment. First, being on a campus in autumn evokes a sense of community rooted in learning and teaching — a mini-city of its own, brought to life by one of the most gratifying acts of all: the sharing of knowledge.
Second, even more camaraderie and solidarity are felt as workers across all classifications and unions raise awareness, take action and talk to one another about this crucial wage campaign. Learn more about the Fair Wages Now campaign and sign up to rally at the State House on Friday, Nov. 20, at massteacher.org/fairwagesnow.
Deb remarked to me that this is an example of how we recognize ourselves as being part of one big union. Higher ed is developing that recognition through an action-oriented campaign, but we should all remember that we are one union, from preK through higher ed, when we talk about our funding and AI/ed-tech campaigns, as well. These are no siloed endeavors that favor one group of workers, while leaving others unconsidered. These campaigns should help us break out of the alienating regimen of individuality in our daily work, a regimen consciously and repeatedly imposed by the boss to prevent us from seeing the inherent value in each other’s labor. So, whatever your local is engaged in currently — a contract campaign, grievance, override campaign or another effort — please remember that we are all fighting as part of, and for, something bigger than ourselves.
Looking forward to seeing you at the State House on Nov. 20!
